Noted dancer Manjari Chaturvedi’s qawwali performance was interrupted midway during an event in Lucknow. She was scheduled to perform at the event after accepting an invitation from the Uttar Pradesh government for it.
Chaturvedi was allotted 45 minutes for her performance and as the music stopped all of a sudden during her act, she assumed that it could be because of a technical glitch. But that was not the case, she explained, while speaking to India Today Television.
“I was invited by the UP government and was allotted 45 minutes for my performance. During my performance, the music was stopped. I thought it was a technical glitch but then, the next act was announced. It was clear that this was not a glitch. When I enquired, I was told that qawaali cannot happen. My performance was stopped because I was performing a qawaali. This is the first time that my performance was stopped,” Chaturvedi told India Today during a telephonic interview.
An upset Chaturvedi expressed displeasure over the incident to her audience during the event and said that she was shocked with the organisers’ behaviour. Especially, that this happened in Lucknow – her home town – has left Chaturvedi squirming over her bitter experience.
“I made my disappointment public. I have not been given an explanation for stopping my performance. My performance was pre-planned and my qawaali performance was known to the organisers. I am shocked that this happened to me in Lucknow, my home town. I have performed across the world and I am sad that this happened in my home,” Chaturvedi added.
Sources, meanwhile, said that the authorities concerned attributed the interruption to “organisational compulsions” and “not any religious or linguistic bias”.
Chaturvedi had put up two performances during the event and the third act was underway. Considering that the program was running late, and a Braj performance was scheduled, there was a concern that all groups should get adequate amount of time on stage before the arrival of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at the event.
Dinner was organised soon after Yogi Adityanath arrived at the venue. Sources said that thereafter, an “issue” ensued between the organisers and the performing parties.
Chaturvedi’s performance, hence, was stopped midway and the following act was announced.
Sources added that Manjari Chaturvedi’s performance was appreciated and enjoyed by those present at the event including Hriday Narayan Dikshit, Speaker of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
